What's the key to a good cheesesteak?
There's only 5 ingredients (6 if you like mushrooms) you'll need for your cheesesteak...with the steak being most important. When it comes to the meat, any cut will work but your best bet is to go with rib eye, flank or sirloin. They are all good options, so go with your preference...you won't go wrong.
Whichever route you go, make sure you slice it paper thin. That's the key! I got myself some thinly sliced steak by Pat LaFreida which was out of this world! If you have to slice it yourself, throw it in the freezer for a bit while you're preparing the rest of the vegetables. This will make it much easier to get the knife through the meat and slice it thin.
Ok, here's the original Philly cheesesteak recipe
Just 4 easy steps is all you need.
First, heat some olive oil in a large skillet and add your peppers and onions (and shrooms if you'd like). Season them with a little salt, pepper and garlic powder. When they're soft, transfer them to a bowl and set aside.
Next, add your steak and season with some salt and pepper. Your steak should be very thinly sliced (almost shaved), so it'll take a bit to get it separated and all loosened up. Once you do, cook it for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes lightly browned.
Don't overcook the meat here!
Then, add your veggies back into the pan and mix until thoroughly combined.
You shouldn't need any more seasoning here, but give it a taste and add accordingly.
Finally, cover the meat and vegetables with the provolone cheese right on top and let it melt. If you want it cheesier, once the cheese has melted, give it a good stir and then add another layer on top.
Cut open your choice of bread (I used Italian roles), toast it a little if you'd like and stuff that baby full of this original Philly cheesesteak recipe.
Enjoy!
